Youth Programs
Youth services funded through the Workforce Investment Act are available through contractors, who link their services with other community-based programs to provide a comprehensive program for youth, tailored to the needs of the individual enrolled in the program.
Youth participants must be:
- Not less than 14 and not more than 21 years of age and
- A resident of Workforce Development Area VI and a low income individual; and an individual who is one or more of the following:
- Deficient in basic literacy skills.
- A school dropout.
- Homeless, a runaway, or a foster child.
- An offender.
- An individual who requires additional assistance to complete an educational program, or to secure and hold employment.
The youth programs offer ten activities to participants in their local communities:
- Tutoring, study skills training, and instruction leading to secondary school completion, including dropout prevention strategies.
- Alternative secondary school offerings.
- Summer employment opportunities linked to academic and occupational learning.
- Paid and unpaid work experiences, including internships and job shadowing
- Occupational skill training.
- Supportive Services, including assistance with transportation, childcare, housing, work attire and tools and referrals to medical services.
- Adult mentoring.
- Follow-up services.
- Leadership development opportunities.
- Comprehensive guidance and counseling, including drug and alcohol abuse.
