Pedestrian and Bicycle Planning

TJPDC supports those who travel using foot power on our roads, trails, and public spaces with a variety of efforts. We include the needs of walkers and cyclists in all of our transportation plans including:

• Safety Studies
• Circulation Plans
• Grant Writing
• Long Range planning
• Transit planning
• Levels of Quality Guidelines
• Disability needs studies and designs

We also perform tasks specific to these modes such as:

• Local Walkability Workshops
• Inclusion of $6 million for walk/bike projects in MPO Long Range Plan
• Regional Greenways and Trails forums
• Interaction with state agencies on codes and policies

The Jefferson Area Bicycling and Walking Advisory Committee (JABAWAC) met for a number of years to get plans and policies in place to support biking and walking. The committee was successful in developing a regional pedestrian bicycle and greenways plan that has been adopted in nearly every locality in the PDC, and helpful in getting VDOT to change funding policies so that implementation of the plan is much more likely. Two members of JABAWAC were placed on the Community Mobility Committee and CHART has a bike/ped representative. Together with staff, they help keep the needs of walkers and cyclists on the table at transportation planning
meetings at the PDC.
